I enjoyed writing about "The Watcher's Guide" so much that I decided that I would give my opinion on another "Buffy" item. This time, however, it is going to be about something very different; premium trading cards, specifically, the "Big Bads" set released by Inkworks on April 21st 2004.
This particular set includes a base set with 72 cards, Pieceworks costume cards (sometimes referred to as "relic cards"), a nine card puzzle set, six foil cards, three box loaders, and a case loader. You can also get a special padded binder for it, also made by Inkworks. I'm a fairly new collector so I don't have any of the special cards or binder as of yet, but I do have the complete base set.
The base set is truly beautiful. Unlike the usual seasonal trading cards, the "Big Bads" cards were printed on a foil board which makes them look extremely attractive and shiny (not a "Firefly" reference, they really are shiny!). All of the cards gleam spectacularly, which looks very cool when flicking through the cards in a binder.
All of the standard cards are divided into subsets including: Buffy, Giles, Xander, Willow, Angel, Dawn, Spike, and Anya. In addition to the front of the cards having a shiny design, the back of the cards feel waxy and they include information about the villain depicted, as well as a quote from either the villain, the hero, or both. The quality of all of the images is high and the cards feel slightly heavier than standard seasonal cards.
If you are looking to collect "Buffy" trading cards and you would like to start off with an affordable, yet striking looking set, I would highly recommend "Big Bads". They are well-made, a treat to look at, and a lovely item for "Buffy" fans to show off. You can find them for an affordable price on Amazon or eBay.

Do you own this particular set? Are you looking to collect "Buffy" trading cards, but you're not sure where to start? Let me know!
P.S: I hope that my photos have done the cards justice. The shine doesn't show up so well on camera.
